Every mattress carrying our name is manufactured at our UK manufacturing site in Ilkeston, Derbyshire — and sold to you by a retailer, not by us.

Breasley (UK) Ltd · Ilkeston, Derbyshire

NBF Approved Member

Breasley is a mattress manufacturer based in the East Midlands. Everything carrying our name is manufactured at our UK manufacturing site on Furnace Road in Ilkeston, Derbyshire — and sold to you through a retailer, never by us.

That last part matters, so it is worth being plain about it. We are a manufacturer. We do not run shops and we do not sell direct. If you are sleeping on a Breasley, Uno or Salus mattress, you bought it from a retailer who chose to stock us — an independent bed shop, a national chain, or one of the buying groups we supply. They know their range, they handled your order, and they are the right first call if anything is ever wrong with it.

What we do is the making. Foam profiled to spec, layers built up in order, borders added, covers put on and the perimeter closed, and — for most of what leaves the building — the finished mattress compressed, rolled and packed so it fits through a normal front door. We were among the first manufacturers in Britain to vacuum-pack a mattress at scale, well before anyone called it a bed in a box.

The Ilkeston site has been extended in recent years, with new machinery brought in, storage added for raw materials and finished stock, and a second production shift established. Together that gives us the capacity to manufacture 5,000 mattresses a week — around 250,000 a year — from a single site.

How a Breasley mattress gets made

Six stages, all of them under one roof at our UK manufacturing site in Ilkeston.

Foam

Foam is profiled to the specification for each model — comfort layers, transition layers and bases, each a different density and a different job.

Springs

Individually wrapped pocket springs move independently of each other, giving zonal support across the mattress. Some hybrid models add a second, finer layer of mini springs above the main unit — our adaptive support system — so the surface responds separately from the support beneath it.

Covers

The ticking is the outer fabric of the mattress. Where a cover is quilted, wadding or a layer of soft foam is stitched into it, which adds a softer touch and a bit of cushioning as you settle in. Not every cover is quilted.

Assembly and closing

Layers are built up in order, borders are added, covers are put on and the mattress is sealed — giving you the finished product.

Inspection

Mattresses are inspected against the specification — dimensions, layer order and label compliance — to check the build is correct and free of defects before it is packaged and distributed.

Roll-pack

Compressed, rolled and packed. It travels in a fraction of the space, which is why a king size can come up a staircase, and it recovers its full shape within hours of being unrolled.

Accreditations and memberships

Our mattresses are manufactured at our UK manufacturing site in Derbyshire, from materials sourced both in the UK and overseas. Rather than ask you to take the rest on trust, here is what somebody else audits, and where you can verify it yourself.

NBF Approved Member

Every bed we make is independently audited against the National Bed Federation Code of Practice — for fire safety, cleanliness and traceability of fillings, and honest product descriptions. Audits are carried out by SATRA, not by the NBF or by us.

The Code holds Assured Advice status from West Yorkshire Trading Standards as its Primary Authority, which means trading standards officers across England are required to have regard to it.

Sedex member, SMETA audited

We are a member of Sedex, the platform used across manufacturing to share responsible-sourcing data with customers. As a member, we are committed to being a responsible business — sourcing responsibly and improving ethical standards and working conditions within our supply chain. Our Ilkeston site has been audited using the SMETA methodology by one of Sedex’s approved third-party audit companies, covering labour standards, health and safety, environment and business ethics.

SMETA is an audit methodology rather than a certificate — it issues no pass or fail — so we describe it as exactly that and nothing more.

Fire safety

All our mattresses meet the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations for domestic use, and are fire tested to BS 7177 by IFS Laboratories, an independent UKAS-accredited testing laboratory.

Our domestic mattresses are tested to the low-hazard level. Products made for commercial customers — hotels, student accommodation, healthcare — are built to the relevant hazard level under BS 7177, such as medium hazard for hotels.

CertiPUR-EU foam

Our polyurethane foams are made to CertiPUR-EU, an independently tested standard covering emissions and prohibited substances including ozone depleters. Foam producers are re-tested annually.

It is a chemical-safety standard rather than an environmental one, and we would rather describe it accurately than dress it up.

Recycled base foam

The base foam across some of our Uno range is made from recycled foam — reprocessed into a dense, stable base layer rather than going to waste.

Five year guarantee

We have every confidence in our products. That’s why every Breasley mattress carries a five year guarantee against manufacturing defects.
